The Big Three: Where Most Living Soil Journeys Go Wrong

Before we dive into your specific questions, let’s address the three "silent killers" of soil vitality.

1. The Over-Watering (and Under-Watering) Trap

In a sterile, coco-perlite, or hydro setup, you can often push water through the medium with little consequence. In living soil, water management is about maintaining a delicate balance of moisture and oxygen.

  • The Mistake: Keeping the soil constantly saturated.
  • The Consequence: This creates anaerobic conditions, killing off beneficial aerobic microbes and inviting pathogens like Pythium or fungus gnats.
  • Our Recommendation: Use a moisture meter or a digital sensor like the ones we use in our soil health assessments. Aim for a "moist sponge" consistency, never dripping, never bone dry.

2. "Over-Loving" with Amendments

We often see growers treat Rhizo Logic® systems like a chemistry set. They add top-dresses, microbial teas, and minerals every week without knowing what the soil actually needs.

  • The Mistake: Excessive fertilization (even organic).
  • The Consequence: Nutrient lockout, pH swings, and high Electrical Conductivity (EC) that can burn sensitive roots.

Q1: Is Living Soil the same as "Super Soil"?

No. This is perhaps the most common misconception. Super soil is typically a heavily amended "hot" soil designed to be used with water only. It often relies on a high concentration of nutrients that break down over time. Living Soil (Rhizo Logic®), however, focuses on a permanent, diverse microbial community that cycles nutrients indefinitely. Q2: How do I know if my soil is actually "living"?

Microbes are invisible to the naked eye, but their effects are not. Look for:

  • Soil Structure: Soil should be crumbly (like chocolate cake), not compacted or sandy.
  • Mycelium: You might see white, fuzzy fungal strands on the surface or under mulch.
  • Root Health: Healthy roots should be bright white and "fuzzy" with root hairs.

Q3: Why are my new leaves turning purple?

While some genetics are naturally purple, unexpected purpling on new growth often signals a phosphorus deficiency or a temperature swing. However, in living soil, it’s often a sign that the microbial activity isn’t high enough to cycle phosphorus at the current root zone temperature. Q4: Do I need to pH my water in living soil?

This is a "pro vs. beginner" debate. In a truly robust Rhizo Logic® system with high organic matter, the soil acts as a massive buffer, regulating pH naturally. However, if your tap water is extremely alkaline (above 8.5) or very acidic, we recommend a light adjustment to help the microbes. We always suggest testing your source water before assuming the soil can handle everything.

Q5: How do I get rid of Fungus Gnats?

Fungus gnats are a symptom of an imbalance, usually over-watering or uncomposted organic matter. Instead of reaching for harsh chemicals that kill your soil biology, use biological controls like Steinernema feltiae (beneficial nematodes) or Hypoaspis miles (predatory mites). Q6: What are "Terrabiotics" and how do they differ from Living Soil?

In our system, Rhizo Logic® refers to the living soil medium itself, while Bio-boost (a Terrabiotics product) refers to the targeted biological inputs used to kickstart or enhance that soil. Think of Rhizo Logic® as the "house" and Bio-boost as the "specialized workforce" you bring in to do a specific job, like increasing nutrient cycling or improving plant immunity.

Q7: Can I reuse my living soil?

Yes! In fact, living soil typically gets better with age. As the fungal networks (mycorrhizae) and protozoa populations stabilize, the soil becomes more efficient. You only need to lightly re-amend based on a soil test and keep the biology active between harvests. This is the core of soil restoration.

Q8: What are Protozoa, and why should I care?

If bacteria and fungi are the "storage units" for nutrients, protozoa are the "consumers" that release those nutrients. They eat bacteria and poop out nitrogen in a form the plant can immediately use. Without these microscopic architects, your nutrient cycling will be sluggish. Q9: My plant looks sick. Should I add more nutrients?

Stop! Most plant "deficiencies" in living soil are actually antagonisms (too much of one thing blocking another) or environmental issues (VPB, temperature, or oxygen). Adding more nutrients usually makes the problem worse. We recommend the "ISH Assessment" to find the root cause before you spend money on amendments you don't need.

Q10: How do I manage the fungal-to-bacterial (F:B) ratio?

Different plants prefer different ratios. For example, most annual crops like cannabis and vegetables prefer a balanced 1:1 ratio, while trees and perennials prefer fungal-dominant soil. You can shift this ratio by the types of "food" you give your soil: woody, carbon-rich materials favor fungi, while simple sugars and green materials favor bacteria. Understanding these Fungal/Bacteria ratios is key to garden success.
